“I am an accidental immigrant from New Zealand, currently living in Portland, Oregon. Since 2021, I have been fully devoted to my fine art, having previously worked part-time as an illustrator. Although I don’t have a degree in arts, I am a self-taught artist who has always found joy in creating art. It brings me immense satisfaction to see others enjoy my creations.
As an immigrant, I often find myself in a permanent observer state of limbo. I think my art reflects that. It is a combination of large bold shapes and tiny scribbly lines, blocks of dominant color and specks of contrast, clean edges, and smudged overlays. Although certain elements seem positive, others are merely educated guesses, creating a level of tension and perhaps confusion. My work shows things as they seem to be, not as I know them to be. But this seems to make the work more interesting and accessible because people relate to the uncertainty.”
