My name is Stephen Aifegha, and I was born in Lagos State, which is located in the western part of Nigeria. Lagos is often referred to as the “New York of Nigeria” due to its metropolitan structure and daily hustle and bustle. As an African, my artistic practice is heavily influenced by my identity and culture. Though I was born and raised in Nigeria, I prefer to identify myself more broadly as African rather than strictly as “Nigerian.”

I am a professional visual and creative artist with expertise in both art and design. Specifically, I am a contemporary African painter who currently lives and works in the United States. I hold a bachelor’s degree in art with a minor in visual communication.

"As a contemporary African artist, my work explores historical, social, and cultural issues that affect Africa, such as Postcolonialism, cultural syncretism, culture clash, and pride. My art can be seen as a form of activism, addressing the problems and issues faced by the continent today. I draw inspiration from pre-colonial and post-colonial struggles that have caused tremendous distress for Africa.

I work primarily with mixed media, incorporating original African fabrics and newsprint in my pieces. The African fabrics help to represent my identity as an African, while also providing insights into the subject matter and narrative of my art. Meanwhile, I use newsprint to add texture and make social commentary. The combination of these materials creates a dynamic visual experience for the viewer."
