Oil on Canvas
$ 5,250
This artwork traded representational subject matter (hotel stationery used by The Langham, London) for an exploration of the medium of painting itself. It is built up with cascades of fractured shapes of pure color that makes the painting feel subjective and spontaneous. Mixing powdered pigments like gold or copper with oil paint and different varnishes, pigment prints and fabrics.
About the artist
Peter Vahlefeld’s paintings grapple with reflections over marketing strategies in art. He has recognized that works of art in our culture inevitably are reduced to the condition of commodity.
What he does is to short-circuit the process and start with the commodity. Peter Vahlefeld overpaints readymade images like advertisements or marketing campaigns of international galleries, museums, and auction houses. The overpainted printed matter will then be digitalized and reworked on the computer, rendering the three-dimensional overpainting as a two-dimensional background for the new painting on canvas.
The result is a multilayered composition in which figure and ground seem to continually shift between the analog painting and its digital counterpart.

A Proof of Provenance is an official document that establishes the genuine nature of an artwork. Issued by a credible authority, this may be signed directly by the creator, the gallery representing the creator, or the specialist who collaborated with the artist. In cases of traded artworks, authenticated bodies or designated foundations may issue such certifications.
These documents are comprehensive, usually detailing the artist’s name, specifics of the artwork (including title, creation date, materials used, size), and ideally, an image of the art piece itself.
