A Proof of Provenance is an official document that establishes the genuine nature of an artwork. Issued by a credible authority, this may be signed directly by the creator, the gallery representing the creator, or the specialist who collaborated with the artist. In cases of traded artworks, authenticated bodies or designated foundations may issue such certifications.
These documents are comprehensive, usually detailing the artist’s name, specifics of the artwork (including title, creation date, materials used, size), and ideally, an image of the art piece itself.
